The Saab 9000 is often quoted as the best car Saab ever built. That's saying something when talking about the Swedish car manufacturer, known for its reliability and sturdiness. There's no lack of state of the art technology in this 9000 with heated seats, heated side view mirrors, cruise control, electric windows on all doors, climate control and many other gadgets that do not feel like they belong in an early 90s saloon.
There's also no lack of luxury. Saab seats are known to be some of the most comfortable in the business and those of the 9000 are no different. Despite having just over 200.000km on the clock, the interior looks fresh, the driver's seat's leather is clean and supple and it's overall an extremely nice car to be in. On the outside the paint is in very good condition despite its age and mileage. The beautiful, deep black colour gives the car a unique look in combination with its typical three spoke wheels. You will also have a hard time finding any rust on this car as it has been maintained well throughout its life.
One of the most exciting things about this 9000 is its 2300cc Turbo 16 valve engine. It delivers power extremely smoothly and has incredible torque in both high and low RPMs. This car in particular got a performance tune adding roughly 50bhp to the standard output. It's estimated to deliver some 250bhp and an unbelievable amount of torque. The head gasket has just been replaced by a Saab specialist who gave the cylinder head itself a look-over as well, deeming the engine good for another few hundred thousand kilometres. Everything else mechanically on this car is sound too. The gearbox shifts nicely without any grinding, the clutch feels sharp and the power delivery is smooth and strong.
The interior is finished with a stunning wooden dash. The original Saab sports steering wheel offers great view on the driving instruments with a very handy Turbo Pressure gauge, allowing you to watch the turbo pressure increase as you're enjoying the immense power this car offers. This particular 9000 also comes with anniversary leather seats that have suède inserts. Despite the car being from the early 90s, it's also fitted with a climate control system from the factory developed by Alpa. The system is known for its efficiency, turning the car into a high performance fridge during the summer, or a nice heater during the winter.
This 1991 Saab 9000 is an ode the best of what Saab had to offer at the time. The car has been preserved nicely and it's very noticeable it has been loved deerly by all of its previous owners. It has had regular maintenance and was recently fitted with new engine mounts, a new exhaust and fresh engine vaccuum lines. Being on the road for almost 32 years and 200.000km obiously comes with some wear and tear. The car's AC could use a rebuild. The headliner came loose over the years but is still in a nice condition. A swift and easy restoration should suffise. When rebuilding the cylinder head, it was noted that the injectors of cylinder 1 and 4 are likely to be due for a replacement. The car runs fine, but fitting a rebuilt & tested injector kit is advised.
Overall, the car is in a perfect driving & mechanical condition, having made a 2000km trip to Switzerland with the current owner over the summer. This is truly get in and drive, with the option of continuing the car's clean maintenance and restoration record, by finishing the things mentioned above.
